What Google has to say about SEO Experts Part One

Please Note: The information on this page is directly from the Google Site and their material that is posted here is in Italics for easy recognition and is the sole property of Google and under their Copyright! The original page can be found here at Google Webmaster Central.

Professional Website Promotions has included these pages here in hopes of showing you just how dangerous it can be to hire an SEO “Expert” to run your SEO Campaign if they do use some of the “shady” tactics and even if they do avoid black hat SEO techniques altogether.

Since Google remains the largest and most popular search engine, it does seem important to know what they think about many SEO companies and to note the many things that they warn you about when selecting an SEO Service Provider. We have left as much of their page in place as possible, including their links since we could not get permission from them to publish this material.

At Professional Website Promotions, we believe to be forewarned is to be forearmed.

Webmasters/Site owners Help

SEO is an acronym for "search engine optimization" or "search engine optimizer." Deciding to hire an SEO is a big decision that can potentially improve your site and save time, but you can also risk damage to your site and reputation. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site. Many SEOs and other agencies and consultants provide useful services for website owners, including:

  • Review of your site content or structure
  • Technical advice on website development: for example, hosting, redirects, error pages, use of JavaScript
  • Content development
  • Management of online business development campaigns
  • Keyword research
  • SEO training
  • Expertise in specific markets and geographies.

Keep in mind that the Google search results page includes organic search results and often paid advertisement (denoted by the heading "Sponsored Links") as well. Advertising with Google won't have any effect on your site's presence in our search results. Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results, and it costs nothing to appear in our organic search results. Free resources such as Webmaster Tools, the official Webmaster Central blog, and our discussion forum can provide you with a great deal of information about how to optimize your site for organic search. Many of these free sources, as well as information on paid search, can be found on Google Webmaster Central.

Before beginning your search for an SEO, it's a great idea to become an educated consumer and get familiar with how search engines work. We recommend starting here:

If you're thinking about hiring an SEO, the earlier the better. A great time to hire is when you're considering a site redesign, or planning to launch a new site. That way, you and your SEO can ensure that your site is designed to be search engine-friendly from the bottom up. However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site.

So what does that mean about Google’s Position on SEO Experts?

Now while they did lay everything out pretty well, take a look at some of the things they say! Get to know something about SEO before you even consider hiring someone to promote your site! Why would that be important? After all, don’t you hire people so you do not have to know anything about that particular job function? If you do, you are not as involved with your business as you should be. An owner of a company should have a complete understanding of exactly what it is that every one of their employees does no matter what the job is. Ideally, you will certainly hire someone who can be more committed to that aspect of your business as that will be their full time job but how are you going to figure out if they are doing their job at all … much less whether or not they are doing a good job if you do not know anything about it?

Notice that there is also a special note for content development. Did you know that according to Google, they do count all of those little spelling errors that “don’t really count” according to many SEO “experts”? You can fill up your website with one-dollar articles and … you really will get what you paid for. When the search engine algorithms see numerous errors in your content, you are going to get dinged for it. There are many subtle nuances that may be missed … and this is not just when writing content for a website in English, this is true no matter what language you are using and no matter what your primary language is.

Think about it for a moment, even if English is not your primary language. If you go to a website in your native language that is chock full of spelling and grammatical errors and it has loads of content and you go to another website that only has a few pages but it is well-written and easy to read, which one are you going to put more faith in? The Search Engine algorithms view things (at least in that respect) the same way that you would as a human reader. Now getting content written by a native English speaker does not mean that you have to pay outrageous prices for your content, although certainly you can if you want to. However, companies like Professional Website Promotions do offer you the opportunity to get English Articles that are well written … and then edited by professional writers in both American English and British English so that not even a little subtle difference will show in your content.

Keyword Research is another hot point regarding Google’s view of SEO and SEO experts. You need to know how to look up the keywords that your SEO Expert is providing you in order to know whether or not it has a high KEI or Keyword Efficiency Index. If you do not know what that means, you are not going to be able to tell whether your personal SEO expert is doing their job or not. It is easy to rank number one for a keyword or keyword phrase that is never searched … or even rarely searched but that is not going to do you any good at all. If nobody is seeing the search engine results page and nobody is seeing your site there, why are you going to pay to attain that unenviable position? It is easy to rank number one for “website sewer trash vehicles” but what does that have to do with your website and how often are people going to search for that particular keyword phrase?

How about the mention by Google about the importance of your website’s layout when it comes to your SEO campaign? Just because you do not see any errors in your browser’s view of your website does not mean that there are no errors there. What about the server side errors that may be showing up to the Search Engine Spiders and the Search Engine Bots but that you never personally see? Do you think that somehow Google is going to overlook all of these as more “simple errors” like your spelling and grammar or do you think that this will be a major factor in the placement of your website on the Search Engine Results Page? If you think that they will not care because “people” will not see it, you are sadly mistaken. The fact is that every error that is on your website will result in a penalty when it comes to the rank and placement of your website. When it comes to SEO and hiring SEO Experts to promote your website, Professional Website Promotions wants you to be forewarned so you can be armed and ready to not only take on the world, but come out a winner with your SEO Campaign.
